Growing Your Own Woodfuel
Is today's
progressive approach of managing carbon emissions, with the grow and burn process removing
carbon from the atmosphere. Managed correctly on a sustainable basis, wood fuel can be
harvested as part of a constantly replenished crop, this is done during woodland
management or coppicing or as part of a continuous programme with the new growth taking up
CO2 from the atmosphere at the same time as it is released by combustion of the previous
harvest.
Our kits
come in a range of sizes to suit all budgets and plantation sizes, by dividing your plantation into four sections and
harvesting in rotation you will have a ready supply of logs year after year, with
the potential to substantially increase the plantation at little extra cost with life
expectancy some thirty years
later on.
Willow is the
predominant species for SRC (short rotation coppice) and is already used in large
scale woodfuel production for power stations, normally as wood chip. Automated domestic
woodchip boilers are also becoming more popular. Both planting and harvesting the woodfuel
crop is straight forward and can be done without specialist equipment if done on a small
scale of up to a few acres. Harvesting is best balanced by dividing the coppice into four
workable sections one year after planting to produce a four year cycle of coppicing,
producing log sizes upto 2 to 4 inches in diameter, so no need for splitting. By
harvesting in rotation you will have a ready supply of logs year after year.
A one acre
plantation intensive wood producing logs or chips when harvested in quarter acre blocks
will yield between 4 - 7 tonnes of air dried wood annually
Our Woodfuel
Kits are of the hybrid willows used in commercial plantations and supplied as one year old
rooted 60cm tall plants to enable easy establishment, ready for earlier coppicing just
after one year from planting, in addition we also include a percentage of Ash as "ash green or ash brown is fit for a queen with a golden crown"
or "ash wet or ash dry a king
or queen shall warm their slippers by" Kits come
with full planting instructions and we are here to help and advise.
